After last season’s 19th inning loss to the Braves on one of the worst calls in the history of baseball, I feared the curse continued when Carlos Beltran stole 2nd base when there should have been catcher interference called on David Freese. After striking out, Freese walked in front of Michael McKenry as he was throwing to second in an attempt to throw out a stealing Beltran. It was clearly interference as McKenry had to alter his throw – sailing it high. The throw clearly beat Beltran, but Jordy Mercer had to jump up and towards first base to field the throw and was unable to apply the tag.
This time, however, the Bucs survived. Tomorrow’s (former) starter, Wandy Rodriguez, was able to work his way out of the inning, even after walking Adam Wainwright. Pedro Alvarez then hit a HR in the top of the 19th with Andrew McCutchen adding some insurance runs later in the inning. Wandy then shut the door in the bottom half with a very entertaining catch at the wall by Josh Harrison mixed in.
I sincerely feel this could be a season turning win. The Pirates have been scuffling a bit of late, including Cutch. To go 19 innings a year after a 19 inning game basically ended their season last year, but this year win it, might launch this team to a late season run. I know as a fan, I am re-energized and full of hope.
