Are the Pirates terrible at drafting?

If you follow the message boards and comment sections of websites covering the Pittsburgh Pirates you’ll find an irrational horde of fans that have nothing good to say about how the Pittsburgh Pirates have been run. These “fans” seem to ignore any of the positive developments the Pirates have had over the years. In 1996, … Continue reading

Should the Pirates trade Mark Melancon for Nick Castellanos?

I know the best Pirates blogs don’t throw hypothetical trade ideas around.  But, this is not one of the best Pirates blogs. I love Mark Melancon and think he is a key reason the Pirates have been as successful as they have been this season.  But, as great as he has been, he is replaceable. … Continue reading

2nd Half Outlook

If the first two games are any indication, Andrew McCutchen is going to carry the Pirates on offense.  The question is – will it be enough?  Francisco Liriano was not on top of his game on Friday and neither was AJ Burnett on Saturday.  The fielding was less than what we’ve seen too. Admit it … Continue reading

Frustration

Two hits. Again. Quick thoughts: The pitching has been very encouraging, both starters and relievers.  How much of this can be attributed to Russell Martin? Martin has been solid defensively behind the plate. Inexcusable for Martin to get picked off first. I can’t wait for Starling Marte to explode.  He just looks like a stud … Continue reading

2013 Lineup Prediction

Here we go: LF  Starling Marte RF  Jose Tabata (Travis Snider) CF  Andrew McCutchen 3B  Pedro Alvarez 2B  Neil Walker 1B  Garrett Jones (Gaby Sanchez) CA  Russell Martin SS  Clint Barmes Pitcher I know Tabata has stated he prefers to bat leadoff and Marte has stated he prefers to bat second, however Clint Hurdle seems … Continue reading

“He Tied The Game!”

I was hanging on last night watching that game with one eye open.  I had hung on to watch Pedro finish that AB representing the tying run after the rain delay in the 9th.  And when he made contact, I leapt from the bed jumping up and down shouting “He tied the game! He tied … Continue reading

Wow.

I think many of the positive thinkers thought the Bucs had a chance to win the division entering the season with the Cards and Brewers regressing.  So it is not entirely surprising to find them in the division lead at the All Star Break.  But, who would have thought they’d have the 2nd best record … Continue reading

Quick notes – 7/7/12 part 2

Should I rename this site DrewSutton.com? I’ve been taking Neil Walker for granted.  The guy is on fire.  Speaking of ‘taking for granted’, how about defense?  Clint Barmes and Gorkys Hernandez saved that game tonight.   Zoltan! Andrew McCutchen .360, Melky Cabrera .358 Michael McKenry has developed quite the power stroke.  Is it for real … Continue reading

Quick notes – 7/7/12

Pedro Alvarez is officially a beast after belting that HR off the LHP.   The lineup is pretty decent right now.  They hit LHP pitching very well, and with Garrett Jones and Pedro, they are plenty solid against RHP too. Drew Sutton continues to stroke the ball well. Gorkys Hernandez left me gape-mouthed when he … Continue reading

Welcome Back Karstens

Yep, I know Jeff Karstens has been back, but tonight was the Karstens I know and love.  The guy just throws strikes.  Something during previous seasons was frustratingly lacking.  This guy is a very solid #3 starter (Erik Bedard is 4th).  I sincerely believe the Bucs can make the playoffs, but they do have many … Continue reading
